Shepherds Theological Seminary Celebrates 20 Years of Equipping Servant-Leaders for Life and Ministry

Twenty years ago, a unique partnership was created as Shepherds Theological Seminary was launched within The Shepherd’s Church in Cary, NC. In celebration of its 37th anniversary on Sunday, September 10, 2023, The Shepherd’s Church recognized and celebrated 20 years of Shepherds Seminary and all The Lord has accomplished through this unique partnership and its impact which is being felt around the world.

Former Provost and Academic Dean, Dr. Larry Pettegrew addressed President & Founder Stephen Davey and his wife Marsha on behalf of the seminary and the church, thanking them for their many years as faithful servant leaders to both the seminary and church.

Marsha Davey was presented with a bouquet of flowers representing the beauty of her servant’s heart, and President Davey was presented with a wall plaque in appreciation for his outstanding vision, dedication and commitment to shepherding God’s seminary and its many students for 20 years.

Shepherds Theological Seminary began classes in the spring of 2003  under the leadership of President & Founder Stephen Davey. The inaugural class was made up of 26 students and met in one classroom. Since then, nearly a thousand students have chosen Shepherds to expand their biblical knowledge and discipleship skills in order to become better equipped as servant-leaders in their local communities throughout the world.

Over the years, the Lord has brought many reputable and godly scholars to serve as administrators and professors, allowing our degree programs to expand to three diploma studies, six master’s programs, and a doctoral degree. In addition to the campus in Cary, NC, Shepherds also has campuses in Laramie, WY, and Bryan, TX. For those wishing to attend seminary, but are unable to relocate, Shepherds offers live synchronous online learning as well as a Local Church Cluster Program offered on the campuses of local churches in surrounding states.

Shepherds is equipping servant-leaders for ministry in and out of the pulpit by strategically shaping both intellect and character through biblical scholarship and personal mentoring. Over the past ten years, Shepherds’ enrollment has increased 180%, making it one of the fastest growing seminaries in the United States. The seminary’s programs and faculty attract students from all over the U.S. as well as from countries around the world.

We all have an important role to play in God’s story! What started 20 years ago in one classroom has now expanded into Shepherds’ graduates serving communities in 34 states and 22 countries around the world—continually magnifying the glory of God and His gospel. The foundation has been laid and now the multiplication of fruit is taking place. President Davey stated, “The most exciting thing to me is that God in His grace has chosen Shepherds Seminary to co-labor with Him in the keeping of His promise in every generation—to provide shepherds after His own heart, who will lead His people with knowledge and understanding.”

A Brief History of Fundamentalism

Back in the 1970’s when I was teaching at a Bible college, one of my students asked me, somewhat tongue in cheek, what descriptive terms he should use to describe his ministry views in order for him to be, in his words, “the top dog.” He meant, like “fundamentalist.”...
